The Assyrian Tragedy
$ 22.00
The Assyrian Tragedy originally was written and published anonymously by His Holiness Mar Eshai Shimun, Catholicos Patriarch. This compilation documents the national struggle of the Assyrian people both during and after World War I, demonstrating Mar Eshai Shimun’s efforts with the League of Nations, United Nations and other various government entities. It provides an account of the Assyrian genocide, the 1933 Simele massacre, and the political failures that led to the displacement and persecution of the Assyrian community detailing the broken British and Iraqi promises regarding Assyrian autonomy and land settlement. It chronicles the forced exodus of Assyrians from their ancestral homes, their internment in refugee camps, and the brutal massacres committed by Iraqi forces, arguing that the community’s survival was jeopardized by the withdrawal of British protection and the rise of nationalist hostility in the then newly independent Iraq.
